Chapter 1 - Introduction to ‘The Need’
Why? Why do women and girls need to learn self defense? This was the underlying and motivating question that hounded me as I developed W.O.W.’s Fundamentals of Self Defense Curriculum. When I first started out, I needed introductory material for a self defense course. As the years went on and participants asked more probing question, I needed more answers and attempted to answer them with more material, such as another article. This section is a compilation of those articles and introductory material. Each chapter can stand alone as an article or can be used in combination to address the looming question, “Why should women and girls need to learn self defense?”
In summary, women and girls need to learn self defense because violent crimes against females are on the rise. Women and girls need to learn self defense because sociopaths stalk them like a predatory animals stalk their prey. They need to learn self defense because sociopaths use modern conveniences such as computers and drugs to lure their prey closer and make their attack easier. Women and girls need to learn self defense because social norms, traditions and cultures will perpetuate and hinder growth and progress if they do not do something. Finally, women and girls need to learn self defense because of the incredible relief, comfort and confidence that they will get when they build their own power within to become self-reliant and able to defend themselves. In today’s society, not only is it an absolute right to defend yourself but it is an essential need.
